TRANSFORMATION COMPASS

A compass for corporate transformation

A Changemaker Company is any for-profit company that drives environmental, social and financial value creation for society/the planet while recognizing every stakeholder as a contributor to positive impact (i.e. a changemaker.)

We’ve identified 7 areas of an organization that are critical for activating business toward societal change. We are currently developing an assessment tool to help corporate leaders navigate and prioritize different areas of organizational change.

Why a Transformation Compass?

As businesses face mounting pressure to address climate change and social inequality, there is a growing discrepancy between corporate sustainability pledges and real-world impact. Our recent study (link) found that 74 percent of employees globally agree that what their employer says about social and environmental responsibility is inconsistent with their company’s actual behaviors. We need to close the gap between intentions and actions. This requires that companies invest in changing how they work. It requires shifting organizational culture and operational systems so even more people can contribute to positive change.

Shared governance

We need more companies thinking and acting as changemakers.

Ashoka has begun to see patterns in how organizations mobilize people to create meaningful change. The transformation compass is inspired by decades of helping social entrepreneurs and business partners grow and scale their societal impact. We've witnessed common strategies used by social ventures to grow and scale, plus through partnering with large for-profit companies to strengthen their social and environmental impact.
